Questions buyers ask about industrial and food-service gloves
- Chemical or puncture resistance means something only with its standard and result. An EU marking such as EN ISO 374 is an EU marking, not a United States clearance.
- Not for patient care. For patient care, choose an exam glove.
Is the task patient care?
If so, this is the wrong page. Patient examination gloves are FDA 510(k) cleared medical devices and have their own group. Non-medical gloves may not be sold or promoted for patient care.
What is the hazard: food contact, chemicals, abrasion?
Food handling needs a glove whose materials comply with FDA food-contact rules. Chemical splash needs a glove with breakthrough data for the chemical in question. Abrasion and grip need thickness and a raised texture. Name the hazard and the glove follows.
Which material and thickness suit it?
Nitrile covers most industrial tasks from about 3 mil to 15 mil, with heavier gauges for maintenance and raised diamond textures for wet grip. Vinyl and polyethylene suit light food handling with frequent changes. Thickness is stated with its measuring point.
Does our state restrict latex gloves in food service?
Several states restrict natural rubber latex gloves in food handling. Nitrile, vinyl and polyethylene gloves are not made with natural rubber latex. Check your state's food code before specifying latex.
Is there a written food-contact statement?
Yes, for every food-service glove. Nitrile and latex glove makers commonly cite 21 CFR 177.2600, and vinyl and polyethylene makers cite the relevant parts of 21 CFR 174 to 178. FDA places responsibility for that compliance on the manufacturer, and the statement comes with your quote.
What is the cost per thousand, not per box?
Industrial gloves come 50 or 100 per box and polyethylene gloves 100 to 500 per pack, so the box price hides the unit cost. Every quote shows the price per case and per 1,000 gloves.
