Buyer questions, answered

Which dispensers are installed?

Multifold, C-fold, standard hardwound rolls and standard and jumbo bath tissue fit dispensers from many makers. Controlled-use roll towels fit one dispenser family. Tell us the dispensers on your walls, and the quote confirms the fit for every refill.

What is the cost per use: sheets per case, feet per roll?

Folded towels are compared by sheets per pack and packs per case, roll towels by feet per roll and rolls per case, bath tissue by sheets per roll. A case with more sheets can cost more per case and less per sheet, so every quote shows the case contents line by line.

Do we have recycled-content requirements?

EPA's procurement guidelines recommend postconsumer fiber levels: 20 to 60 percent for bath tissue, 40 to 60 percent for towels, 30 to 60 percent for napkins, 10 to 15 percent for facial tissue. Recycled content and certifications are stated as the manufacturer declares them.

Which liner size and gauge for each container?

Start with the container's capacity in gallons and the liner's width and length. High-density liners, measured in microns, suit paper and light waste. Linear low-density liners, measured in mil, stretch and resist puncture for sharp or heavy waste. Compare gauge only within the same resin.

Do red bags meet the transport tests?

Film bags used as inner packaging for regulated medical waste must pass a 165 g dart impact test and a 480 g tear test in both directions under DOT rules, be marked and certified by the maker, and hold no more than 46 gallons. Each red bag listing states the test results.

How to choose

  • Identify every dispenser, and list the universal and controlled-use formats separately.
  • Compare cost per use, not case price.
  • Set recycled-content requirements by product type, then read the manufacturer's declaration.
  • Match liners to containers by capacity and dimensions, then choose resin and gauge for the waste.
  • Specify DOT-tested bags for regulated medical waste.

Standards this group can show

  • EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines recycled fiber levels
  • Green Seal GS-1, UL ECOLOGO 175, FSC or SFI chain of custody, where held
  • DOT 49 CFR 173.197 for red biohazard bags (ASTM D1709 and D1922)
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 labeling and red bags
