Buyer questions, answered

Face shield, goggles, or glasses with side shields?

A chin-length face shield covers the whole face and is the common choice for splash on isolation carts. Goggles seal around the eyes for liquid and dust. Glasses with solid side shields suit impact and light splash. OSHA lists all three as acceptable where splashes or sprays can be expected.

What do the Z87 markings mean?

Z87 is basic impact and Z87+ is high impact. D3 marks splash and droplet protection, D4 dust and D5 fine dust. Products are marked to the edition they were tested to, and Z87.62 covers protection against sprays of blood and body fluids.

Will it fit over prescription glasses and an N95?

Many shields and some goggles fit over prescription eyewear and a respirator. Each listing states this where the manufacturer does. A shield that fogs or lifts a respirator seal defeats both, so check the fit with the respirator model in use.

Single use or reusable, and how is it cleaned?

Disposable shields are discarded after one use. Reusable frames take replacement visors, and reusable goggles are disinfected with the products the manufacturer lists. Each listing states which, with the frame or headgear model confirmed on the quote for replacement visors.

Is it anti-fog?

Anti-fog coatings are stated by the manufacturer and, where marked, tested under Z87.1. Each listing states the coating as the manufacturer gives it.

How to choose

  • Choose the form for the hazard: shield for splash, goggles for liquid and dust, glasses for impact.
  • Read the marking, and match it to what the task needs.
  • Check the fit over prescription glasses and the respirator in use.
  • Decide single use or reusable, and plan replacement visors for reusable frames.

Standards this group can show

  • ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 markings (Z87, Z87+, D3, D4, D5)
  • ANSI/ISEA Z87.62 biological splash, where claimed
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 eye and face protection requirements
  • Latex statement
