How to compare vinyl gloves

  1. Standard or stretch

Stretch vinyl is a modified formulation the manufacturer names as such; it is still a vinyl glove.

  2. Thickness and strength

As quoted in manufacturers’ 510(k) summaries, ASTM D5250 sets 0.08 mm (about 3.1 mil) minimum thickness, 11 MPa tensile strength and 300% elongation — compared with 14 MPa and 500% for nitrile under ASTM D6319. Compare the values each manufacturer states.

    Glove thickness vs. weight

  3. AQL

The acceptable quality limit used to sample a lot for pinholes. Lower is stricter; FDA’s minimum for exam gloves is AQL 2.5.

  4. Plasticizer and latex statements

Statements such as “DEHP-free” or “Not made with natural rubber latex” appear only where the manufacturer makes them.

  5. Pack-out

Gloves per box can differ by size and by market. Compare prices per 1,000 gloves.

About vinyl exam gloves

Vinyl exam gloves are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and, like nitrile, are FDA-cleared patient-examination gloves — vinyl under product code LYZ. They suit the tasks your facility assigns to vinyl; which tasks those are is your infection-prevention team’s decision.

As quoted in manufacturers’ 510(k) summaries, the vinyl specification sets a higher minimum thickness than nitrile — 0.08 mm, about 3.1 mil — but lower minimums for strength and stretch. “Stretch” and “synthetic” vinyl are manufacturers’ names for modified formulations; we list them as vinyl unless the FDA clearance says otherwise. Some manufacturers state their vinyl is made without certain plasticizers, such as DEHP, and we show that only where the manufacturer says so.

We carry Dynarex’s Next Generation Stretch vinyl exam glove, and vinyl exam gloves from sempermed.
